Choosing a college is personal, but your rejection letter isn’t. This is a hard reality that so many high schoolers have to wrestle with, but it’s worth knowing (and repeating) that a college admission doesn’t define you, your worth, or all the effort that you have put into this process. Here’s what to keep in mind:
This isn’t the end. In fact, this could be the beginning of brainstorming with your parents, teachers, and advisors as an opportunity to really get creative about your next steps.
There are plenty of great options. Not getting into your dream school doesn't mean there aren't other amazing places where you can thrive. Take a look at the other colleges that accepted you. Consider exploring gap year programs, community college, or online courses that will continue to get you ahead. Necessity is the Mother of Invention, and it is a space that allows us to research and problem solve.
This is a chance to find your perfect fit. Sometimes, the best opportunities come when we least expect them. You might end up somewhere even better than you originally imagined! Chances are, an adult you know and respect has taken school detours, career changes, or life pivots that have gotten them to where they are now.
You've got this, and you aren’t alone. It may feel like you’re the only one navigating disappointment, but there are thousands of other high school seniors at this moment. College Admissions is a gauntlet of various requirements and standards, but that also means there is a place waiting for you, ready to be your stepping stone for your future.
No doubt this is an emotional time and the admissions process is a long and trying test. However, it’s ever important to know as a high school senior that a college does not hold all the cards to your future–YOU DO! You have every opportunity to shine and succeed. Remember and believe this as you work through this challenge and turn it into a positive opportunity.
