The Exploratory Visit: A Campus "Test Drive"

Think of a college visit as a test drive. You're not necessarily buying the car (yet!), but you want to get a feel for how it handles, how comfortable it is, and if it's the right fit for you. While you may have an idea in your mind of colleges you already KNOW you want to apply to, it’s OK (and recommended!) to see some that might not be on your list. Take advantage of what is close in proximity to you to start a gauge of pros and cons of the general college environment and learn more about what sticks out to you.

What to Look For (Beyond the Brochure):

  • Campus Vibe:

    • Is it bustling with activity? Are students outside, studying, playing sports, or simply hanging out?

    • Is the atmosphere relaxed or competitive?

  • Academic Life:

    • Peek into classrooms and libraries. What kind of resources are available? Do students seem engaged?

  • Student Life:

    • Are there places to eat, socialize, and relax? Are there flyers or information posted around campus that advertise opportunities to make friends and grow community?

    • Is the campus located near stores, restaurants, or other community resources?

  • Campus Size and Feel:

    • Do you prefer a large university or a small, intimate college? How does the size of the campus make you feel? Overwhelmed? Comfortable?

  • Outdoor Spaces:

    • Are there green spaces, courtyards, or places to sit outside and enjoy the weather?

Remember:

  • Don't feel pressured to apply to every college you visit. These visits are about gathering information and getting a sense of what you like (and don't like) in a college environment.

  • Talk to current students. Ask them about their experiences, their favorite spots on campus, and any advice they have for prospective students.

  • Trust your gut feeling. How does the campus make you feel? Do you see yourself thriving in this environment?

College exploration is an exciting adventure. So, get out there, explore different campuses, and discover the college that's the perfect fit for you!
