Creating A Balanced College List

A well-rounded and diversified list ensures that you have a variety of options that suit your academic, personal, and financial needs.

Diversify by Selectivity: Safety, Match, Reach and High Reach Schools

Safety Schools: Your academic credentials (GPA, course rigor, test scores) exceed the average admitted student profile. There is a high chance of acceptance, and these colleges will generally offer the most affordable college experience.

Match Schools: Your academic profile closely aligns with the average admitted student. These schools offer a reasonable chance of acceptance and are a good fit for your abilities and interests. The college decision will depend on the applicant pool, institutional priorities and your “fit” with the college mission.

Reach Schools: Your credentials may be slightly below the average admitted student. Admission is competitive but applying gives you a chance to aim high and challenge yourself. Applying early and showing demonstrated interest may increase your acceptance odds.

High Reach Schools: Colleges with low acceptance rates (less than 10%) are high reach for even the strongest students as applicants are competing with some of the most competitive students nationwide. Admission decisions are unpredictable. Factors can include institutional priorities, unique contributions to the overall accepted class, demonstrated interest, senior year rigor and distinctive accomplishments.

These categories vary by student as a “Match” college for a friend might be a “Safety” School” for you.  Talk with your school counselor or a college consultant to ensure your college list is balanced. At the end of the day, YOU create your college experience and can get a great education wherever you go – regardless of the college “designation.”
