The Common App is undergoing changes for the 2025-2026 application cycle, and while change can sometimes feel daunting, it reflects a positive trend: colleges are actively listening to their applicants.
"Challenges and Circumstances" Question Introduced:
Formerly the “Community Disruption” question, this prompt is replaced with a broader “Challenges and Circumstances” question. This section was initially created during the pandemic to allow students to address if they had been negatively impacted in some way.
Now, this section offers room for students to provide some context of their application, allowing them to expand on hardships that may have impacted their application or achievements. The word count maximum remains at 250 words.
Word Count Adjustments:
The "Additional Information" section will be reduced to 300 words for first-year applicants and 1500 words for transfer students. This section is a space for students to share something that is absolutely essential, and sparingly, if it all.
Essay Prompts Remain Consistent:
Great news is that the core Common App essay prompts will remain unchanged. This provides stability for applicants and counselors, allowing for early preparation and time to refine and perfect your personal essays.
The college application process is dynamic, and the Common App's willingness to adapt demonstrates a commitment to meeting the evolving needs of its applicants. Changes can require adjustments, but they ultimately aim to create a more equitable and accessible pathway to higher education.
