Hey Future College Students and Families!
As summer starts to wind down, there's a big date on the horizon for high school seniors: August 1st. This is when the Common Application officially goes live, unlocking the doors to college applications and revealing all those important supplemental essay prompts and deadlines. But before you hit that "submit" button, there's plenty to plan and prepare for. Here’s your ultimate guide to navigating the college application process like a pro!
1. Know Your Platforms
More than 1,000 colleges accept the Common Application, while over 150 use the Coalition Application. These platforms streamline the process by allowing you to apply to multiple colleges with a single application. They each have their own quirks, but both include a standard set of information: personal details, family background, high school info, educational history, test scores, and extracurricular activities.
2. Compose the Common Essay
Both the Common Application and the Coalition Application require one main essay. This essay is your chance to showcase who you are beyond the numbers and grades. It’s the perfect opportunity to highlight your unique voice, experiences, and aspirations. (Check out this blog to learn more about crafting the essay.)
3. Tackle the Supplemental Essays
In addition to the main essay, most colleges will ask for supplemental questions. These essays help colleges understand why you're interested in their specific institution and what makes you a good fit. Tailoring your responses to each college shows that you’ve done your research and are genuinely interested.
4. Strategic College Lists
Most students apply to around 4-8 colleges, but if you’re aiming for highly competitive or Ivy League schools, your list might be longer—up to 15 schools. Focus on creating a balanced list that includes reach, match, and safety schools. Quality is key, so make sure each college on your list is a good fit for your academic goals and personal interests. (Check out this blog to learn more about creating a balanced list.)
5. Understand the Deadlines
The college application timeline can be overwhelming. Early action and early decision applications often have deadlines as early as mid-October, with regular decision deadlines typically falling in early January. Keep track of these dates to ensure you meet all your deadlines and don’t miss out on any opportunities.
6. Get Started Now!
While August 1st marks the start of the application season, effective planning and preparation should begin much earlier. Use the summer to brainstorm essay ideas, gather necessary documents, and start drafting your applications. The more prepared you are, the smoother the process will go.
As you approach the college application season, remember that preparation is your best ally. By understanding the process and starting early, you’ll set yourself up for a successful application experience.
