5 Important College Criteria to Consider

Applying to college is an exciting and often overwhelming process. With so many factors to consider, it's essential to approach this journey with a clear plan and informed perspective. Here are 5 Important College Criteria to guide high school students and their parents.

1. Academic Programs and Majors

When considering potential colleges, the availability and quality of academic programs should be a top priority.  Research the program strength and reputation of specific programs.  Look at faculty credentials, department resources, and internship/research opportunities.  Also, understand the flexibility to switch majors or create an interdisciplinary major which is essential if you’re undecided or have multiple interests.

2. Campus Culture and Environment

When students feel like they “belong” on campus, they are more engaged, earn higher grades and are more likely to graduate in 4 years.  Students should consider whether they want to study in a bustling city, suburban area or a rural setting and should understand the school’s position on diversity and inclusion. Investigate the availability of clubs, weekend activity options and student participation in campus events.

3. Financial Considerations

It’s crucial to understand the financial implications and explore ways to make college affordable which includes understanding the COA (Cost of Attendance), financial aid process and availability of scholarships (those provided by each college as well as private). Consider the potential ROI (return on investment) by researching the graduation rates, placement rates and average starting salaries for graduates.

4. Admissions Requirements and Acceptance Rates

Understanding the process, due dates and changes of acceptance are vital.  Check the admissions requirements for each school, including recommended courses, SAT/ACT scores, essays, recommendations and any supplemental materials.  Look at the college’s acceptance rates and apply to a mixture of highly likely, match and reach schools to balance the options.

5. Support Services and Resources

As mentioned earlier, there is a link between student engagement and grades, graduation rates and starting salary. Understand the academic and career support and services at each college and ensure that the college values mental health support and overall well-being.

Choosing the right college is a complex decision. While one student might want a politically engaged campus, others will prefer an focus on D1 athletic events. Some students prefer smaller classes where they know their professors and yet others desire a big school feel and can comfortably navigate large lecture style classes. What is right for one student isn't necessarily the best fit for another.  By considering these 5 criteria, students can make a more informed and confident choice for their learning style.
